Egypt Signs 1.2 GW Solar-Plus-Storage Project

Recently, Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities Energy Platform jointly announced the official signing of a cooperation agreement with the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company. The agreement entails the collaborative development of a total 1.2-gigawatt (GW) solar power project coupled with a 720-megawatt hour (MWh) battery energy storage system.

According to the agreement, the project will be implemented in two phases across different regions of Egypt. The first phase involves a 200-megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Benban, equipped with a 120 MWh storage system, scheduled for commercial operation in the third quarter of 2026. The second phase comprises a large-scale 1 GW solar power plant in Minya, integrated with 600 MWh of storage capacity, targeting commissioning in the third quarter of 2027. Upon completion, these projects will not only significantly expand Egypt’s renewable energy generation capacity but also, through the accompanying large-scale storage facilities, effectively enhance the power system’s peak-shaving capability and operational stability.

It is reported that Infinity Power is a joint venture between Egypt’s Infinity and the UAE’s Masdar, with extensive experience in renewable energy project development. Hassan Allam Utilities Energy Platform is jointly controlled by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and currently manages a portfolio of 2.3 GW of renewable energy projects under construction, with an additional pipeline of 1.65 GW covering solar, wind power, and other sectors, demonstrating a well-established industrial footprint.

This project aligns closely with Egypt’s energy development strategy. The Egyptian government has explicitly set targets to increase the share of renewables in the total energy mix to 42% by 2030 and further to 65% by 2040. The construction of this 1.2 GW solar-storage project will serve as a crucial pillar in achieving these strategic goals.
