According to the “India Solar Market Report Q2 2025” released by Mercom India Research, India’s solar project installations surged to 18 gigawatts (GW) in the first half of 2025, marking a significant 31% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Large-scale solar projects accounted for 12.6 GW of this capacity, reflecting a 20% year-on-year growth.
Mercom noted that this sharp rise in solar installations was primarily driven by regulatory deadlines. Many developers accelerated the partial commissioning of their projects to qualify for full waivers on inter-state transmission charges by June. Additionally, the growing demand from distribution companies for round-the-clock renewable energy provided strong support for the increase in solar capacity.
Of the 18 GW added in the first half of the year, 11.3 GW was commissioned in the second quarter alone, representing a 145% increase compared to the 4.6 GW installed in the second quarter of 2024. During this quarter, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra led in new capacity additions, accounting for 33.7%, 27%, and 17.4% of the total, respectively.
