NEA: China Adds 212GW Solar Capacity in H1 2025, Average Utilization Drops to 94%

At a July 31 press conference, China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) released renewable energy integration data for the first half of 2025.

Deputy Director Pan Huimin of the New Energy and Renewable Energy Department reported:

  • Record renewable expansion: Renewables accounted for nearly 60% of China’s total installed capacity
  • H1 2025 additions:
    • Total renewables: 268GW (+99.3% YoY), representing 91.5% of all new capacity
    • Solar PV: 212GW (79% of renewable additions)
    • Wind: 51.39GW
    • Hydropower: 3.93GW
    • Biomass: 0.71GW

Cumulative capacity (as of June 2025):

  • Total renewables: 2,159GW (+30.6% YoY), comprising 59.2% of national capacity
    • Solar PV: 1,100GW
    • Wind: 573GW
