Solar Shingle Manufacturer GAF Energy Shuts Down Manufacturing Plant, Auctions Production Equipment

Following the announcement by solar shingle manufacturer GAF Energy to close its R&D and production base in San Jose, California, and relocate its headquarters to Texas, the remaining production equipment is now being auctioned.

Roofing materials specialist GAF established its energy division in January 2022 and launched the Timberline Solar nailable solar shingle. The company initially operated a 50MW capacity plant in San Jose, followed by the opening of a second production facility in Georgetown, Texas, in 2023.

As of the latest statistics, the annual production capacity at the Georgetown base has reached 250MW. Workers laminate solar cells onto TPO roofing materials to produce the solar shingles there.

In October of this year, GAF Energy laid off 138 employees in California, with the layoffs taking effect on December 13th. The company simultaneously announced it would move its official headquarters to Georgetown and consolidate its manufacturing operations at that location.

GAF Energy President Martin DeBono stated in an announcement: “Given the ongoing changes in the solar industry, we are adjusting our business and team to focus on the core markets that are most attractive to builders and homeowners.”

Equipment from the San Jose plant is currently being auctioned. The Texas facility is also selling a second batch of surplus materials.

Earlier this year, GAF Energy released its upgraded second-generation Timberline Solar product, which offers increased power output. The ES 2 model achieves a unit power of 57W.
