Spanish Congress of Deputies Rejects Power Grid Reform Decree

The Spanish Congress of Deputies recently voted down a royal decree aimed at strengthening grid security and accelerating the energy transition, with the opposition prevailing by 183 votes to 165. The decree had proposed measures such as technical upgrades, expanded energy storage, and consumer-side innovations to prevent a repeat of the widespread blackout that affected all of Spain and Portugal on April 28, 2025. The rejection has sparked strong backlash from the energy sector. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez promptly announced that the bill would be resubmitted, vowing that it would “undoubtedly pass.”
