French energy giant TotalEnergies announced on Thursday the commissioning of its largest solar project in Europe, comprising five installations near Seville, Spain, with a combined capacity of 263 megawatts (MW).

The solar farm, located in Spain’s sun-drenched Andalusia region, will generate 515 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable electricity annually—equivalent to the annual consumption of over 150,000 Spanish households. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 245,000 metric tons per year. TotalEnergies stated that most of the electricity produced will be sold under long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), with the remainder supplied to the wholesale electricity market.
The company highlighted that the 400,000 bifacial solar panels installed at the site, equipped with tracking systems to optimize sunlight capture, were classified as a project of “strategic interest” by the Andalusian regional government. The initiative has provided a significant economic boost to the local area, creating jobs and fostering regional industrial development.
TotalEnergies revealed that its global renewable energy portfolio now totals 28 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity. As part of its strategy to balance investments in oil and gas with renewable energy expansion, the company aims to increase this figure to 35 GW by the end of 2025.
“This milestone in Spain underscores our commitment to accelerating the energy transition,” said a TotalEnergies spokesperson. “By leveraging cutting-edge technology and strategic partnerships, we are delivering scalable clean energy solutions while driving economic growth in host communities.”
The Andalusia project, which employed 400 local workers during construction, includes dual-sided solar panels that capture sunlight from both sides, boosting efficiency by up to 20% compared to traditional modules. The regional government granted the project fast-tracked permitting due to its climate and economic benefits, including €120 million in local investment over its lifecycle.
TotalEnergies’ renewable expansion aligns with broader EU goals to source 45% of energy from renewables by 2030. The company’s global portfolio now spans 28 GW, including 15 GW of wind and solar assets in operation and 13 GW under development.
