Trina Solar Collaborates with NIO

Recently, Trina Solar, in partnership with NIO and the Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, has successfully implemented a microgrid-powered green charging station project at the Shanghai Chongming Dongtan Bird National Nature Reserve (hereinafter referred to as the “Dongtan Reserve”). As the first initiative under the “UNDP-NIO Clean Parks Project,” this cross-sector collaboration aims to protect wetland ecosystems and migratory bird pathways, offering a replicable model for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Migratory Bird Protection Network. Through innovative cooperation, it exemplifies the integration of ecological conservation and green development.

The Chongming Dongtan Ecological Reserve, rich in marsh vegetation and benthic biodiversity, serves as a critical stopover and wintering ground for migratory birds. Every year, millions of birds rest or overwinter here, creating a spectacular natural phenomenon. However, the reserve faces dual challenges: minimizing human impact on wetland vegetation and bird habitats, while addressing the inefficiency and high carbon footprint of traditional energy supply methods.

To address these needs, NIO has provided a fleet of smart electric vehicles for patrol operations and collaborated with Trina Solar to build a clean, low-carbon solar self-sustaining energy system. This initiative embodies the vision of a “Zero-Carbon Future + Wetland Coexistence,” supporting Chongming’s development as a world-class ecological island and setting a benchmark for integrating renewable energy with smart transportation. William Li, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of NIO, praised the project during NIO Day 2025: “NIO and Trina Solar have jointly established a clean, low-carbon solar self-sustaining system for nature reserves, working together to protect clear skies.”

By delivering a scenario-based solution of “Zero-Carbon Future + Green Transportation,” Trina Solar and its ecological partners have created a sustainable, replicable model for ecologically sensitive areas. The project not only reduces electricity costs but also enhances energy efficiency and management, driving the development of smart and convenient green power for future transportation. The successful completion of this project demonstrates Trina Solar’s capability to design and implement stable, reliable green energy systems in complex natural environments, while also reflecting the company’s commitment to ESG principles. From reducing carbon emissions at the energy consumption end to minimizing impacts on wetland ecology and bird habitats during construction, Trina Solar consistently adheres to eco-friendly practices.
