UK Solar Market Booms, Witnessing Best Start in Nearly a Decade

Solar Media market analyst Josh Cornes tracked the UK’s solar installation performance in the first half of 2025, revealing that capacity growth over the past six months nearly matched the entirety of 2024.

The UK has surpassed 2GWp of newly installed solar capacity in 2025, marking its strongest start in nearly ten years, with an additional 3GWp of large-scale ground-mounted projects currently under construction.

At the beginning of the year, projections estimated 3GWp to 3.5GWp of new solar capacity for the UK market in 2025. With the completion of the Cleve Hill project and rooftop solar installations exceeding expectations, the country’s solar capacity has rapidly exceeded 2GWp. Ground-mounted projects still dominate, accounting for over 70% of installations with more than 1.5GWp already deployed. This growth was primarily driven by the completion of Cleve Hill (373MW), the UK’s first Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) for solar. Additionally, fourteen projects of 50MWp or larger have been completed, representing over 60% of total new capacity, including recent grid-connected projects by Low Carbon and NextEnergy totaling more than 400MWp.
