Recently, the Australian energy storage manufacturer PowerCap launched its sodium-ion energy storage system in the European market. The first batch of products will be deployed in Italy, Germany, and Spain. According to publicly available information, the product is priced at €500 per kWh. The company currently has an annual production capacity of 5 GWh and an established distribution network in Australia.
PowerCap’s product line primarily includes residential energy storage, commercial and industrial energy storage, and power batteries. Compared to lithium-ion energy storage systems, PowerCap emphasizes that its sodium-ion batteries offer a longer lifespan and come with a 15-year warranty. Additionally, the company highlights its self-developed BMS and EMS, Australian manufacturing, and 100% recyclability of all products at the end of their life cycle.
PowerCap’s sodium-ion energy storage system currently focuses on safety, long lifespan, and modularity as its core selling points. The company has already received approximately 500 pre-registrations from users in Europe, indicating significant market interest. However, converting inquiries into firm orders may take some time.
The initial deployment in Italy, Germany, and Spain aligns with regions that have high solar photovoltaic capacity and policy support for energy storage. However, these markets also have well-established lithium-ion battery suppliers and intense competition. Despite the technical advantages of sodium-ion batteries over lithium-ion alternatives, the competitiveness of products priced as high as €500/kWh remains in question.
