Recently, Spanish renewable energy developer Grenergy announced that it will construct a 340MW photovoltaic power plant in central Chile, coupled with a 960MWh energy storage system.
Upon completion, the project will supply state-owned copper company Codelco with renewable electricity under a 15-year agreement, enabling 24/7 uninterrupted clean energy.
Project Overview: Uninterrupted Green Power Output Year-Round
The project, named Monte Águila, is one of the core projects of Grenergy’s hybrid energy platform in central Chile. It plans to build approximately 340MW of photovoltaic generation systems, utilizing centralized inverter architecture and high-efficiency bifacial modules, with energy shifting and output smoothing achieved through the 960MWh energy storage system.
According to Grenergy’s official disclosure, the green electricity generated will be traded and dispatched by its commercial energy company GR Power. Starting in January 2026, it will supply Codelco with a stable approximately 0.5 TWh (500 GWh) of electricity annually.
Unlike traditional intermittent supply models, this agreement requires year-round uninterrupted (24/7) power supply, placing extremely high demands on the reliability and control capabilities of the energy storage system.
Oasis Central Platform: Hybrid Energy Cluster
The Monte Águila project belongs to the “Oasis Central” hybrid energy platform being developed by Grenergy in central Chile.
This platform has a planned total capacity of approximately 1.1 GW of PV generation and 3.8 GWh of energy storage systems, comprising five projects: Tamango, Teno, Planchón, Monte Águila, and Sol de Caone.
It is noteworthy that the development concept for Oasis Central originates from Grenergy’s flagship project, Oasis de Atacama, in the Atacama region of northern Chile. That project is Latin America’s first ultra-large-scale solar-plus-storage platform, with a planned capacity of up to 2 GW PV + 11 GWh storage, and is also considered a significant global model for hybrid renewable energy.
The PPA signed for Monte Águila with Codelco represents another key addition to Grenergy’s hybrid energy strategy, marking the company’s transition from a pure-play PV developer to an integrated solar-plus-storage power supplier.
