Trina Solar Reaches $132 Million Settlement with SHARP

On July 18, 2025, Trina Solar (SH:688599) announced that, through amicable negotiations, the company and SHARP have voluntarily reached an enforceable framework settlement agreement to resolve their dispute. Under the agreement, Trina Solar will pay a specified settlement amount to SHARP and provide module replacements and after-sales services in accordance with its product warranty terms. Both parties will terminate the arbitration proceedings shortly after signing the agreement, with no further disputes remaining.

Background of the Dispute

In August 2013, Trina Solar and SHARP signed a module supply contract for approximately 936MW (worth around $600 million). The parties completed module deliveries and payments between 2013 and 2016.

However, in October 2023, SHARP filed an arbitration claim with the ICC (International Chamber of Commerce), alleging that insulation defects in the backsheets—supplied by a third-party vendor (which SHARP had participated in approving)—caused financial losses. SHARP argued that Trina Solar should be held liable for the supplier’s actions and sought $132.2 million in compensation.

The newly reached settlement resolves all claims without admission of liability, allowing both companies to move forward.
