Silicon-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells: Canadian Company WattByWatt’s Technology Shows Promising Initial Results in CEA Testing

The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and Canadian startup WattByWatt are collaborating on the development of manufacturing processes for perovskite-silicon tandem photovoltaic solar cells, achieving encouraging initial results with an efficiency of 28%.

Founded in 2020 in Montreal, WattByWatt is a startup specializing in perovskite materials and their applications. The company designs and manufactures single-junction perovskite mini-modules for indoor IoT and industrial IoT applications, such as smoke detectors, locks, cameras, and remote controls. Additionally, WattByWatt is developing innovative processes for depositing key perovskite layers in both single-junction perovskite PV cells and perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells.

A critical innovation lies in WattByWatt’s ability to deposit perovskite layers in ambient air using an industrially scalable wet process, enabled by proprietary ink formulations developed by the company.

CEA, a leading research institution in tandem photovoltaic technology with a strong track record of world-class advancements in the field, has successfully integrated WattByWatt’s inks and processes to deposit perovskite-based active layers in CEA’s reference two-terminal tandem cell architecture. The resulting devices demonstrated a power conversion efficiency of 28% on a 9 cm² area.

These results may open new perspectives for the scaling and industrialization of perovskite-silicon tandem technology using this high-potential process.
