Providing Stable Green Electricity! Malaysia Unveils 1.5 GW Solar-Energy Storage Project

Today, Malaysia’s infrastructure giant Gamuda Bhd. and clean energy company Gentari Sdn Bhd. signed a joint statement announcing their collaboration to develop a 1.5 GW renewable energy project. Through an innovative combination of solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants and battery energy storage systems (BESS), the project aims to provide stable green electricity for Malaysia’s hyperscale data centers, addressing the core demands of the country’s rapidly growing digital economy.

Under the cooperation agreement, the two parties will develop centralized solar PV power plants in strategic regions, complemented by advanced battery energy storage systems, within the framework of Malaysia’s Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Programme (CRESS). This solution effectively addresses data centers’ stringent requirements for power stability by leveraging solar energy to provide foundational green electricity, while the energy storage system regulates peak and off-peak loads in real time to ensure 24/7 uninterrupted power supply. Lim Kian Min, CEO of Gentari Renewables, stated that the collaboration combines the strengths of both parties, not only advancing Malaysia’s energy transition but also providing critical support for the development of digital economy hubs. Gamuda Energy and Gentari Renewables will serve as the respective executing entities, leveraging Gamuda’s full industrial chain capabilities in engineering construction and Gentari’s 8 GW renewable energy asset portfolio across Southeast Asia to ensure the project’s efficient implementation.
