JA Solar Commences Construction of 2GW Solar Cell and 2GW Module Factory in Egypt

JA Solar recently participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Atum Solar integrated photovoltaic manufacturing base in Egypt. In collaboration with international partners including UAE’s Global South Utilities, Bahrain’s Infinity Capital, and Egypt’s AH Industrial Management Consulting, the company is jointly advancing the implementation of this project with a total investment of 10.5 billion Egyptian pounds (approximately $210 million).

Located in the Sokhna region of the Suez Canal Economic Zone in Egypt, the manufacturing base is planned to consist of three factory buildings. Upon operation, it will have an annual production capacity of 2GW of solar cells and 2GW of solar modules, along with a supporting 1GWh energy storage system capacity. According to the plan, the solar cells produced at the base will be entirely for export, while the modules and energy storage systems will primarily target the local Egyptian and surrounding regional markets, contributing to the strengthening of the local photovoltaic industry chain.

JA Solar Deputy General Manager Li Shaohui attended the groundbreaking ceremony and signed the project construction contract on-site. In this cooperation, JA Solar will leverage its technological expertise and large-scale manufacturing experience in photovoltaic cells and modules to provide core support for the construction and operation of the base. Raw materials required for production, such as aluminum and glass, will be sourced entirely locally in Egypt. This approach not only reduces production costs but also drives the coordinated development of upstream and downstream industries in the region, creating a significant number of employment opportunities.
