Major expansion plans: JA Solar invests $847 million in new facility

JA Solar, a leading Chinese solar PV manufacturer, has announced its plans to construct a new production base in Ordos, Inner Mongolia with an investment of RMB 6.021 billion (~$846.9 million).

The project will include a 30 GW crystal pulling facility, a 10 GW wafer manufacturing facility, as well as a 10 GW module production line to be completed in phases over a period of 36 months.

The investment aims to help JA Solar establish complete vertical production capacity within China’s Northwest region and meet the growing demand for high-efficiency solar products from global customers. With this expansion, the company intends to enhance its market share, profitability, and provide cost-effective solar products to its customers.

This is not a new development for JA Solar as it has previously announced major investments for expanding its production capacity.

Last year, the company unveiled several large-scale expansion plans, including a RMB 12.84 billion investment in a 20 GW wafer and 30 GW cell project in Ordos and another RMB 11.54 billion investment in multiple projects located in Shijiazhuang and Dongtai.

In November 2022, JA Solar also announced its plan to invest RMB 7.4 billion in two new projects in Yangzhou and Qujing, bringing the total investment for these four announcements to nearly RMB 40 billion.

Currently, JA Solar’s module production capacity stands at nearly 50 GW, with cell and wafer capacity at approximately 80% of module capacity. However, with the new capacity coming online, the company aims to increase its module production capacity to over 80 GW by the end of 2023, with cell and wafer production capacity reaching 90% of the module capacity.

With its significant investment in new production capacity, JA Solar is positioning itself to be a major player in the global solar PV industry for years to come. The company’s expansion plans reflect its commitment to providing efficient, cost-effective solar products, and meeting the growing demand for renewable energy solutions.
