Tunisia’s Largest Photovoltaic Project Achieves Full Grid Connection

On December 16 local time, the Kairouan 100 MW photovoltaic power station project in Tunisia, the country’s first large-scale ground-mounted PV power station and the largest single-capacity photovoltaic plant in Tunisia, which was constructed under an EPC contract by a consortium of Northwest Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. of China Energy Engineering Group and Tianjin Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd. of China Energy Engineering Group, successfully achieved full grid connection and officially transitioned to commercial operation. This milestone injects robust momentum into the region’s green energy development.

The project is located in Kairouan, central-eastern Tunisia, with a total installed capacity of 100 MW and covering an area of approximately 200 hectares. It innovatively employs multiple advanced technologies, including high-voltage grid connection, optimized cable losses through direct burial, scenario-adapted single-axis tracking systems, and integrated smart operation and maintenance systems. Additionally, in response to the unique environmental challenges of the Kairouan region—such as expansive soil geology, arid climate, intense ultraviolet radiation, and frequent sandstorms—the project team carried out adaptive innovations in expansive soil foundation treatment as well as UV and sandstorm protection for cables. These measures significantly enhance the operational stability of the photovoltaic power station under complex conditions, laying a solid foundation for the high-quality and timely delivery of the project.
