Masdar Signs Power Purchase Agreement for 150 MW Solar Project in Angola

Recently, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the 150 MW Quipungo Solar Photovoltaic Project in Angola. The agreement was executed with Angola’s state-owned electricity off-taker, Rede Nacional de Transporte de Electricidade (RNT-EP).

This marks Masdar’s first PPA in Angola, signifying its official entry into Angola’s renewable energy market. The Quipungo project is also the first under the “Royal Antelope Project,” a program encompassing three sites with a total installed capacity of 500 MW, aimed at strengthening the southern Angolan power grid and supporting the country’s sustainable development goals.

The agreement was signed on behalf of both parties by Abdulaziz Alobaidli, Chief Operating Officer of Masdar, and Mauro Hernany Ferrerira Martins, Executive Director for Market Operations and Regulatory Affairs of RNT-EP. The signing ceremony took place during the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly, a key event within Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

Under the PPA, RNT-EP will purchase the electricity generated by the Quipungo solar photovoltaic plant over the long term. The project, located in the Huíla Province in southern Angola, has a capacity of 150 MW. As the first commercially demonstrative project under the “Royal Antelope Project,” this agreement lays a solid foundation for the phased development of the subsequent 500 MW initiative. Upon completion of the full project, it is expected to create over 2,000 jobs, provide clean electricity to approximately 300,000 households, and significantly enhance the power generation capacity of southern Angola’s grid.

The “Royal Antelope Project” reflects Masdar’s commitment to developing large-scale, bankable renewable energy infrastructure in emerging markets, supporting national energy strategies while expanding access to reliable and affordable clean energy.
