On April 8, Yunnan Yongping shared energy storage project realized the whole station live and connected to the grid. This project is Yongping County’s first grid-forming energy storage power station and also a key demonstration project in Yunnan Province that simultaneously possesses both peak-shaving and frequency-regulation capabilities.
The project is located in Bonan Town, Yongping County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, with an installed capacity of 200 MW/400 MW. It is equipped with a 220 kV booster station, a new 220 kV transmission line of 0.8km, and a lithium iron phosphate battery energy storage system. A total of 80 5 MW energy storage units are used. The energy storage batteries are boosted to 35 kV locally after 40 5 MW booster converter units, connect 8 circuits of 35kV collector lines to the 35kV bus side of the newly built 220 kV booster station

during the construction, the project team strictly controlled the construction quality of all links, complete key processes such as site leveling, foundation pouring, equipment installation and commissioning in an orderly manner, and strictly adhere to the bottom line of safety and quality. During the commissioning and acceptance phase, the team refined both individual equipment testing and subsystem integration tests, precisely optimized equipment parameters, and comprehensively eliminated technical risks. On the eve of grid connection, the project team made advance arrangements to conduct a comprehensive hazard inspection of the step-up substation and energy storage equipment, while strictly adhering to grid dispatch instructions and standardized operating procedures throughout the process. On April 4, the project successfully completed the boost station inrush closing test. On April 8, the entire substation was energized and connected to the grid, with all operational parameters meeting the specified standards. It is reported that, once the project is put into operation, it will be able to accommodate an additional 460 MW of photovoltaic renewable energy, substantially enhancing the region’s capacity to absorb and transmit new energy while providing reliable grid support. This will effectively fill the gap in the large-scale application of grid-forming energy storage in Yongping County and address key shortcomings in the development of a new-type power system in the region. The project’s best practices in high-standard construction, efficient commissioning, and safe and reliable operation have established a high-quality, replicable, and scalable benchmark for grid-side energy storage across the province.
